on and asked whether the sanction of this Government had

been obtained for the alteration.

As a matter of fact not only the

necessity of extending the reclamation till it joined

Blackhead's Lots but also the advisability of acquiring

those Lots (Kowloon Marine Lots Nos. 34 and 81, and

Kowloon Inland Lot No. 210) had been impressed on me by a

consideration of the question of connecting with the

Railway the Wharves and large Godowns or Warehouses belong-

-ing to the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company

which are situated on the West side of the Peninsula

in the position shown on the enclosed plan. These Wharves

and Godowns are the most important in the Colony and are

used for and in connection with the transhipment of goods

by its leading firms. It is essential therefore in the

interests of the Railway as a competitor for the carriage

of goods to Canton that there should be a siding from the

Terminus in Hunghom Bay to the premises of the Wharf and

Godown Company.

A siding would also be required
